definitions file

Receive msg "Could not locate a valid defintions file..." I've tried to
follow the advice given so far, but it doesn't work. First - I don't know
what an AV program is. I have automatic update on my virus protection. I
haven't detected a program, so far, that doesn't work. Just keep getting
that msg over and over. I'm afraid I'm missing something. Thanks for any
help you can give me.
