Defrag Problem Since Installing

Ever since I installed Live Beta, Windows Defrag keeps saying there are
files that cannot be defragged. I uninstalled Beta, and I'm still getting
the same message. Like it permanently toasted it. I can't find what hidden
file Beta Live left behind to delete to fix this. I tried reinstalling it
and deleting the hidden folder that had the shareddata and all that. Didn't
work. Still getting the same Defrag problem. Uninstalled it again, same
defrag problem. I even did a System Restore to before I ever installed it.
Didn't fix the defrag problem. I know it's a file Live Beta left somewhere,
but I can't find it. Does anyone know which file it is? I ended up
downloading a free defrag program, which works fine. But I would really
like to fix the one Live Beta broke. Thanks.

Did you view the Defrag Report and see if it reported the file(s) it
couldn't defrag?

If the file(s) happen to be in the System Information Volume ... defrag
won't touch them ... but it will report about them.

Yes, Windows defrag mentioned two system restores, but only when I had it
check the volume, not when it completed it, it just kept saying two files
weren't defragged. I installed Diskeeper Lite and it, too, is now saying
it's two system restores. But I don't want to delete all my system restores
right now. I make a lot of them, so I'm hoping in another month or so they
will just naturally get deleted. Diskeeper Lite is actually working better
than Windows defrag did. My system is actually faster with it. But all
this definitely started from Messenger Live Beta. I had no problems prior
to this and I'm fanatical with defragging and cleaning my system. I ended
up going back to Beta Live since I liked some of the new features, but I've
turned off the sharing folder option and I'm not having any weird problems
now with it. I think the sharing folder option leaves some system file on
and that's what rebooted my system on me. With it off, I'm not having
problems.

Unless you're over 90% disk space usage then it won't make any difference to
defrag

Glad to hear, but keep in mind that when the system restores are removed,
they will be replaced with others, who in turn will also cause a
fragmentation report.

I know what you mean about Windows Live stuff, look in your User's Local
Settings\Temp folder ... it's full of crap that is not being removed.
And this just keep getting added (if you use RSS Feeds, Onfolio, Phishing,
.... from Windows Live).

You can view the contents of each of the System Volume Information folder.
Try permitting viewing and see if the name shows up in Defrag.
This only pertains to Windows XP Pro and up.

1. Windows Explorer | Folder Options | View
2. Uncheck Use Simple File Sharing
3. Click OK
4. Right click on a System Volume Information folder
5. Click on Properties | Security
6. Add Administrators as a User
7. Click on OK

Now you can expand System Volume Information and review the files.

Remember to undo the above to set things back.

NOTE: System Volume Information must be collapsed prior to undoing above.

You were right, it's now showing on all my recent restores, but it never
lists exactly what file is causing this. And it's definitely from Live
Beta. This is always going to bother me. I just wish I knew which file
they hid that's causing this. Also wondering if upgrading to the full
version when Beta turns to Public if that will fix it, unless they just
leave behind some garbage file.

Thanks. I've never done that before. Anytime I ever wanted to look at the
system volumes it wouldn't let me.

Found exactly same problem. Also installing after carefull defragmentation.

Diskeeper pro is not solving it, not even in a boot time defrag.
Testing beta of office give me the same problem.

Hope this will not hapend in the final version.

I went back to 7.5

This seems to solve the problem:

-Uninstall windows messenger (control panel-windows components)
-Uninstall msn messenger (7.0 or 7.5)
-Defrag
-Install live messenger beta
