defrag problems windows 2000 pro

when I try to run the defrag program a screen pops up to tell me a "dskchk"
is scheduled to run on C, please rund "dskchk/f". Search brought up diskchk
which I opened and it appeared to run tho it said it was read only and no f
parameter was specified. Help--I need to defrag.
