My 6 Gb harddisk contains appr. 2 Gb data and is still flawless. It is run by
Windows 98 and defragmentation already takes between 10 and 12 hours. Cause
is that running the program drive data change and have to be reread a lot of
times, which makes defragmentation start all over. What other solutions are
there besides changing to a more recent Operating System? Should that be the
only solution, is Windows 98 an improvement on this?

Try defragmenting the hard drive while in safe mode.

Thank you for responding. I will soon try the safe mode. Details shown during
defrag however suggest that a more efficient use of memory (I mean more
efficient for defrag) should be possible. Do you know in which OS this has
been tried and wether it is successfull?

Defrag took about one hour in safe mode, and had no interruptions. Of course
little fragmentation had taken place so soon after defrag had been done, but
safe mode definitely shows to be very helpful. Thank you once more.
