Maybe defrag is already running in the background? You can't have more than
one instance of dfrgui.exe running at the same time. If you try to start a
second instance, it may silently fail.

Look in Task Manager to see if there is an instance of dfgui.exe already
running.

Also not that Defrag in Vista does not provide the colourful UI from
previous versions. Defrag was re-written by Microsoft to remove the last of
the code licensed from Executive Software; and also to get a security
review. It was noted that the old GUI, although appealing, was actually an
extremely inaccuarate picture of what was really happening on the disk. Also
in Vista, defrag is scheduled to run silently in the background, so a glossy
UI was less important than before. In Vista, all you get is the "Disk
Defragmanter" dialogue box, with a "Run on a Schedule" option (selected by
default) and a "Defragment Now" button to kick off a manual defrag.

If you have no instances of Defrag currently running or scheduled, and you
cannot get even this minimal Defrag, then, yeah: you may have a problem.

Hope it helps,

Hi Andy,

Are you clicking it from shortcut, typing "dfrgui" in Start Menu'
white line (Start Search) area, or straight fro
"C:\Windows\System32\dfrgui.exe"? There is another file calle
"Defrag.exe" in system32. It will do nothing but flash a quick comman
prompt on and off.

Here is a link for a free defrag program, in the mean time, calle
"Auslogics Disk Defrag" that is great with a progress status graph an
it's faster.

'Disk Defrag - Reclaim the Speed Of Your Disks
(http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/)

Hope this helps,
Shaw

Thanks, C:\Windows\System32\dfrgui.exe I was clicking on. If I go into
command prompt in windows and select Defrag.exe then that works. But what I
have done now is downloaded that http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/
program and that seems to be going good. Strange I cannot get dfrgui.exe to
work though, maybe a service hasn't initialised?

Thanks again for the link to the program.

Andy.

Hmm, in that case ... sorry, I dunno.

I'd suggest check in the Windows System and Application Event logs (in
Adminstrative Tools) to see if any events are logged about why Defrag cannot
lauch (eg it might be silently crashing, etc).

Also, go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Problem Reports and
Solutions, to see if Windows has detected an error in Defrag (eg the process
ended with an access violation, etc instead of a normal ExitProcess).

Also, try running the EXE from an administrative Command Prompt - dfgrui.exe
requires administrative elavation, there may be something blocking process
elevation when you try to launch it from the GUI??

Apart from that ... sorry, I dunno :-(

Andy,

Your welcome. Have you tried doing a restart to see if maybe it was
just a temporary fluke caused by some conflict?

Thanks, yes I tried restart but it seems to have been disabled like that for
some time. Never mind that free defrag program seemed to work fine and I
like it better than the normal XP/Vista one anyway because of the graphics,
I find there is something quite satisfying about seeing the blocks moving
around like that whilst its defragging the drive! :-)

Search for AusLogics disk defrag. Better than vista's built in defrag,
free, and vista compatible.

Have you also checked to make sure your defrag service is not disabled?
