Delete back up files

Hello,
I am trying to delete back up files from my laptop running on
Windows Vista Basic the files are around 10 gb everytime I open and press
delete they just wont delete can someone let me know how I can remove the
from my hard drive once and for all.

What type of backup files, are they files you created with a backup program,
are they files you simply copied as backup, please explain. What happens
when you try to delete the files, do you receive an error message, if yes,
what is the message.

They are back up files from when my computer crashed around a month ago, I
have all on discs.
I try to delete backup folder it says do you wont to delete continue I click
yes, then goes onto recycling items, then says you need to confirm this
operation so I click yes
then says windows needs your permission I click yes carries on recycling
then keeps coming up saying destination folder access denied you need
permission to perform this action try again or cancel clicked try again but
just keeps coming back.
This back up file is 10gb in size that is why I wont it off my hard drive.

Try deleting the files in the folder first, then try deleting the folder.
If there's more than one file and you get the same message trying to delete
them all at once, try one at a time.

Have you tried deleting them in Safe Mode? Boot the system, start tapping
F8, at the menu choose Safe Mode and try deleting them once in Safe Mode.
Another possible way would be to try navigating to the files using the
Command Prompt and deleting them there.

If all else fails, you could try simply overwriting these files with newly
created backup files. That way the space isn't completely lost. Also,
sometimes there's a means within a backup program to delete files. If it
doesn't have a specific function to delete files, with the backup program
opened, go to File, open, navigate to these files, right click a file,
select delete and see if it will let you accomplish this task through the
application that created them.

Another possibility, have you tried taking ownership of the file and then
tried to delete it? Right click the file, select properties, go to the
Security tab, click advanced and go to the Owner tab.

I have tried all you have said I am the owner of the back up folder but still
when I try to delete it comes upu saying try again or cancel.

So I'm assuming you couldn't overwrite the file either, even using the
backup software you are used to create it in the first place?

Is this an encrypted file? That's the only other thing I can think of which
might block all manner of deletion.

You haven't mentioned which backup application you used to create these
files. Were these created with Vista's Backup and Restore Center or were
they created with some other application?
