Delete downloaded update

Windows update automatically downloaded (but did not install) Windows XP
SP3. Having had problems with this update on another computer, I do not wish
to install this update just now.

The Windows update icon does not appear in the taskbar, so I can't open this
and disable installation from here. The only indication I have that there is
an update available is when I close down. Although I can continue to ignore
this, I am not the only user and someone else close down without opting to
ignore the update.

How can I select to disable the installation of this update? Can I delete
the update file, or remove reference to it in a list or the registry?

Many thanks.

After making the changes below, WinXP SP3 will not be downloaded again
without your permission...but you WILL have to eventually download it again
to install it, so I'd just leave everything as is: SP3 will NOT install
without your approval, no matter what your Automatic Updates setting is
(other than OFF).

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Start | Settings | Control Panel | Automatic Updates | Select the "Notify
Only" option here then exit (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525).

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
