How can I delete a Vista windows system32 file (dxtrans.dll)? I can't seem
to find any way to gain "permission".

Hi Peter,

It's a protected system file, so you can't delete it. Why do you think you
need to?

Why would you want to delete that? It's part of DirectX

As a general rule, unless you're a Windows guru, you shouldn't be playing in
the System32 folder; look but don't touch.

Thanks for the reply Rick (and others).

Here's my problem. I have installed Roxio Creator 2009 on my laptop (Vista
Business Sp1). Installation seemed to go ahead without any problems.
However, when I try to open the program it freezes with the message
"C:\Windows\System32\Dxtrans.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains an error. Try installing again .............".

If I open Task Manager, I get the message "RoxioCentralFx.exe - bad image".

If I look in System32 for Dxtrans.dll it shows 0 bytes.

I am using Directx 10 (the Roxio program tried to install Directx 9). I
can't reinstall Directx 10 - attempting to do that just gives me the message
"this or a newer version is already installed" and quits.

Removing and reinstalling Roxio Creator does not help.

Peter

Vista still uses DX9c for the desktop, DX10 is mainly for games.

I would try a system restore to before you installed the Roxio software,
that should restore that .dll file.

Hi Peter,

Open an elevated command prompt, run "sfc /scannow" to verify the system
file set.

For an elevated prompt, type CMD into the the start/search line and then
right click the menu entry and choose 'run as administrator'.

Thanks Rick.

Did as instructed. Sfc found errors it could not correct. I have attached
the log file.
How do I effect a repair - using the Vista disk?

Hi Peter,

There are often extraneous errors dealing with the log files, ignore them.
Did it list any error with the system file you are concerned with?
