Deleted Desktop

I am trying to help a friend. They have a laptop running Vista
The desktop has entirely disappeared although the task bar and star
button remain at the bottom and you can get into apps and files

Any one know how to restore all the icons onto the desktop. Even th
Recycle bin has gone

Try right clicking in the desktop, View, check 'Show desktop icons'.
