Deleted Files Add to Memory

When I delete files to the recycle bin and then empty the recycle bin . . . .
the memory on my hard drive fills up.

For example:
I'd realized that my hard drive was 68.7 GB full - which didn't make sense
because I just got this laptop (Dell Inspiron) and there isn't anything on
it, but I've deleted about 50 GB worth of files. I decided to experiment and
delete about 3 GB worth of stuff. When I emptied the recycle bin, I checked
the used memory on my hard drive and it was 70.1GB.

. . . What's going on??

You are reading the space remaining (unused space)

As Mr. Urban pointed out downstream... that's 71GB free... not used.

And... not that it means a hill of beans to anyone... hard drive memory is
usually refered to as "space," e.g. "my hard drive has 71GB's free space."
Or... "That stoopid program takes up 45GB's space on my hard drive." Jes'
lingo, thass all.

And... as I'm sure you'll find out... what the system reports as free space
and what you expect to be your free space may be two entirely different
numbers.
