I made the mistake of upgrading from NAV to NIS 2005. I dowloaded it from
Symantec and had problems from then on. I kept getting an error message in
the middle of my screen.I had someone come in to fix it but he could not. I
had to delete Norton and install McAfee. Now I am unable to get Automatic
Updates because the BITS will not start. I keep getting an error message that
windows cannot start it. I emailed Microsoft, Symantec, Gateway and am still
searching how to get it started.
Has this happened to anyone else? Please send some suggestions.
Thanks,
jan

Hi Jan,

Make sure that SystemEventNotification and COM+ Event System are both
started (you might need to set them to "Automatic" as well). Symantec most
likely changed one of those.

You can change these in the services window: StartButton - Run -
services.msc

Always disclose your OS and maintenance level when you need help.

I will assume that this is XPsp2; otherwise BITS may not be needed.

rpcss is a dependent service. Make sure it is starting as well.
(FYI use command line: sc qc bits to see this.)

If you need more help you need details to refine your problem symptom
description. E.g. look for relevant messages in the Event Viewer or
in the WindowsUpdate.log

Thanks Jon for getting back to me. I checked the system event notification
and it was on manual so I changed it to automatic, the Com+Event System was
already on automatic, and then tried to start BITS but it still is giving me
the message "Windows cannot start on local computer. See system log event.
If this is a non-Microsoft srevice, contact the vendor and refer to error
code - 2147024894 "
Any other advice will be helpful.
Thanks,jan

Hi Robert,
Sorry for leaving out that info, this is all new to me. Yes, it is XPsp2. I
don't know much about computers and this is why I don't know how or where to
use the command line. I will follow your steps if you send them. I checked
the event update.log and can't make out anything from that. I don't know
where to find the Event Viewer, and if I did,I don't know if I would know the
problem....which is why I had a computer Dr. come to my house and help me.
When I was emailing Microsoft Support they had me send them 3 zip files -
the update log, the error message that is on the screen and the system info.
They said they could not help me and sent me to Windows XP Newsgroup where
they said I might find some help. Well here I am looking for any advice.
The error message I get when trying to start BITS is "Windows cannot start
BITS on local computer.See review in system log event. If this is a
non-Microsoft service contact vendor and refer to error code-2147024894 "
Thanks for answering me.

jan, my BITS would not start either after a Norton NIS 2004 uninstall.
Following a suggestion at http://www.techimo.com/forum/t144953.html , I
reinstalled my Norton NIS , rebooted my computer, then uninstalled it using
the CD (clicking "Install" from the Setup Screen will offer the uninstall
option.) BITS was restored and I was again able to install via Windows
Update. Because I reinstalled Norton via Run>msconfig it was not necessary
to remove my new antivirus and firewall. Hope this solution works as well
for you as it did for me.

Thanks Marisa for your advice, I did not have to try it though. Earlier
today I found a message that someone posted and I tried what they
did........it worked !
I opened Run and typed in :
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
And in an attempt to fix possible problems with security providers I
also did the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
After that I went to Services and clicked on the BITS and then clicked Start
and it did. I then went to Windows Update and the automatic updates started.
Thanks to Justin H., I am extremely happy !!! Thanks again Marisa for your
email.

Probably, but unfortunately, I'm not sure what they are. Hopefully
someone will have equivalent instructions for 2k for you.
