deleted user account won't go away!

I logged on as admin & deleted a user account.

Now the machine insists on trying to boot up in that defunct account
with "wrong password" message (that account never had a password). The
only way to get started is to "switch user" at *every bootup*.

That screen is the only place the old account still appears -- it's gone
from the Control Panel User Accounts page & so on.

How do I fix it so bootup at least comes up with just the admin p/w box?
Using Vista Home Premium.

You probably originally set it to automatically log onto that now-defunct
account. Reverse that by doing the opposite of this:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -

I'm using Vista Home Premium, not XP.
I'm loath to try an XP fix on Vista.

If there's some need or way to remove the autologin of the deleted
account (according to instructions in control panel user accounts) one
would think that doing the account deletion would take care of it.

Any other ideas?

Hi bj,

The fix is exactly the same for Vista as it is for XP.

bjm,

Try looking in 'Control Panel > System > Change Settings > Advanced > under
the 'User Profiles' heading, click 'Settings' .
If the profile still exists, delete it from here.

Thanks. That seems to have disappeared the remnant of the deleted
account.
I still think account-deletion should have taken care of things like
this!

It didn't & there weren't any accounts I could delete -- the delete box
stayed grey whichever I chose -- "admin" or "unknown".

But the other method offered (but for some reason explained on an XP
help site even though applies to Vista as well) does seem to have
done the trick. And I do mean trick.
