Deleting contacts on server does not delte them from Mobile 5

Hi,
I synced my Outlook contacts with my PC and realized I had too many (about
1000) and did not really want most of them there. So I am trying to delete
all the contacts on my Cingular Mobile 5 phone and keep only a few. It does
not appear I can do a multi-select of contacts, so I tried deleting them from
Outlook - easy - and thought they woudl get deleted on the phone. However,
that does not deem to be happening. I am using 4.2. Any help in getting this
accomplished woudl be greatly appreciated!

When you sync with Exchange is the synchronization completing sucessfully?
