Hi all,

I have just recently downloaded the SP2 file to install on my computer from
the Windows Updates section. Before installing I decided against it,
especially after reading about all the problems, but even though I haven't
installed it I would still have the original file somewhere on my system. Can
anybody tell me what this supposedly "75MB" file(s) is/are, and where it
is... so that I can completely remove it.

Thank you to anybody who can help me.

Cheers

Hi

Clean out the folder
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

where %windir% typically is C:\Windows

Hi

Without listing the locations, it is very difficult to say...

Thanks to all who responded to my question.

I'd like to clarify that I want to keep XP SP2 on my system. What I would
like to know is what files are safe to remove once SP2 is up and running?

As far as I can tell, the ms knowledge base article 875350 details how to
remove SP2 completely from the system, rolling it back to SP1, or whatever
the previous version was. The files that the article refers to are located in
C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$ (spuninst.exe). However, if there are
any SP1 uninstall files left, can those be removed safely by the methods
outlined in the article?

I selected some SP2 file names and searched for duplicates. There are dupes
located in the following folders:
C:\windows\system32
C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 - size 453 MB
C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download - size 410 MB

Besides the files in the folder "system32," can any of the others be
removed?
Also located in the softwaredistribution folder are files that appear to be
related to SP1, so I might as well ask about those.

Thanks in advance,
Liz

The two folders above is system folders and you should not
delete any files from them.

> C:\windows\softwaredistribution\download - size 410 MB

All files/folders in this folder can safely be deleted.

If you see %windir%\$NTUninstall* folders which dates back to your
SP1 installation, you can delete those. They are not removed by the
SP2 installation in case you want/need to go back to SP1 (and then
be able to uninstall the hotfixes in case you need to).

The following types of folders should be safe to delete:

C:\windows\$xpsp1hfm$\
C:\windows\$NtUninstallQ<some#>$\
C:\windows\$NtUninstallKB<some#>$\
