Deleting SP1 Backup files

I have installed SP2 to my XP Pro machine and had no errors and so far I have not
found any of my programs not working correctly. I got a free CD from my local Office
Depot store and it installed perfectly. However, before I installed it I ran disk
cleanup and scandisk for each partition. I opened the Windows Task Manager and ended
all of the processes that were listed as me being the user with the exception of, the
Task Manager of course, and Explorer.exe.

My old ZoneAlarm 4.5 and my Norton Antivirus 2002 are working as usual. The 2.2GHz
PC boots to the desktop in one minute and thirty seconds and shuts down in 20
seconds. All seems to work as before the update.

I used the option to store my old files in the event I had to restore SP1 again. I
found the files stored where I designated them to be stored. However you cannot see
them unless you set XP to show Hidden Files.

I have searched in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs list to see if there was an
entry to be used for removing these files after I am satisfied I want to stay on SP2.
I cannot find an entry there to do this. Is there a place to go to elegantly
remove them or do we just find th e folder and delete them. The folder is named
similarly to other Windows critical updates and shown in blue type when it is
revealed, so it looks like there should be a place to select their removal, elegantly :-)

Hi

You will need to delete the folder yourself.

From a previous post by me:

Folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a SP2 installation:

1)
If you are sure you don't need to uninstall SP2, you can delete
the %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\ folder.

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

Note that the folder is marked as hidden, so to see it, you need
to have Explorer configured to show hidden files/folders.

Alternatively (for the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder):

If you make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD, you can put it
back if you need to uninstall SP2. After restoring the backup,
run %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spunins t.exe
to start the process.

2)
If you see %windir%\$NTUninstall* folders which dates back to your
SP1 installation, you can delete those. They are not removed by the
SP2 installation in case you want/need to go back to SP1 (and then
be able to uninstall the hotfixes in case you need to).

The following folders should be safe to delete:

%windir%\$xpsp1hfm$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallQ<some#>$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallKB<some#>$\

Note that the folders are marked as hidden, so to see them, you
need to have Explorer configured to show hidden files/folders.

3)
You should clean out this folder now and then (WU5's
temporary download folder):

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

4)
Stop and start System Restore to possibly regain some space (but
you will lose your current Restore points). You also may want to reduce
the amount of disk space System Restore is allowed to occupy.
