Am wondering if there might be a solution out there from somebody re: the
amount of time it takes my Dell desktop to boot up and become functional. It
takes nearly ten minutes to get up and running and I haven't figured out how
to rectify the problem.
I have deleted unnecessary programs, run Disk Clean-up and Defragmenter, etc.
I have noticed that when I run my Ad-aware and X-Soft Spyware that they both
show 41+ processes running which seems like a lot but I don't know how to
determine which, if any, I should eliminate. I first noticed this problem
about a year ago when I renewed my Norton Anti-virus package. I have tried
to get Norton to tell me if that is the cause but have not received a helpful
answer from them despite numerous queries. So, I am seeking suggestions from
a brighter person than me!
My system uses Winows Explorer 7; Pentium 4 and 2.66 Ghz chip/processor; 60
gig hard drive (with only 40% used).

Thanks!

Windows version? How is this related to Windows Update?

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #3-5 below until your anti-virus
application has been installed and fully updated!

3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

4. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day
free trial version of, e.g., NOD32**, KAV7***

5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

Do your problems persist now?

[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
Norton Add-ons for a while.]
