Dell driver update keeps failing

The last 6 times that I shutdown my computer, I was prompted to let winXP
install updates and then shut down. It seemed odd that I was getting a new
update everytime I used the pc so I checked my upadate history and sure
enough, Windows Update was failing to install the same update. The update was
for "Dell Inc. - Video - Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller" and
the error code was "Error Code: 0x800B0100". I'm not sure why the update
won't install and I'm not real concerned with getting it installed, seems
like a driver update that I probably don't need. Does anyone know why it
isn't installing? and more importantly, how can I "hide" or delete the update
so my computer doesn't keep trying to install it?

so why did MS release this driver update? and why as a CRITICAL UPDATE? can
anyone at MS answer? and....w/o saying "...never get your hardware updates
from Microsoft again..." because I did NOT ask for any hardware updates, just
CRITICAL windows updates.

Dear Microsoft, please feel free to compensate me for my wasted time fixing
this issue...I have over 150+ Dell Opiplex and Dimensions, all of which have
this new driver installed or waiting to be installed. thanks m$!

I opened Microsoft Update and clicked "Custom" and MSU checked for the latest
updates and this particular update was not listed. I assume this is because
it has already been downloaded. I was finally able (I think) to solve the
problem by turning off the Automatic Updates feature which then allowed me to
see a list of available updates to install. THe only one listed was the dell
file. I unchecked it, then checked to option to not show me that update again
when the message box poped up. Seems like a whole lotta work for something
that is supposed to make life easier!

Because Dell asked them to.

Hopefully Dell will reconsider making this an optional update again? Will
this eventually become an opt update at some point? Have noted several
complaints... Please allow me to add mine.

The latest/"final" 82845g video drvr release was released 6/21-6/28/05
(.4342) + is still available from Intel. With that + it being an opt hdwe
update from Microsoft, certainly people (admins + end-users) can find it
easily... Interesting to note we've been running the 1/14/03 (.3442) version
of this driver w/o complications for over 2 years. What valid, rare occasion
could possibly prompt a driver (especially video!) to be pushed from optional
to critical?

I understand how to disable/change a variety of settings regarding the auto
updates feature --- from a server AND pc administration stand-point; however,
am frustrated by having to do so. Doing so defeats part of the purpose of
having this functionality built into automatic updates--- to install critical
updates completely without requiring user interaction. This has been a huge
time-saver for us, and would imagine it has for many companies of all sizes.
Fortunately only about 10 PC's out of our 100 are affected by this problem,
but it still takes time to roll-back the video drivers + set/exempt these
PC's from auto-winupdates d/l + install. Also still takes time to run around
+ update these PC's when new critical updates are released. Even if PC's are
set to auto d/l but not auto-install.

In closing... "Exempting" out the PC's (or setting them to not auto d/l +
install updates) that are experiencing issues should have to be (at best)
only an extremely temporary solution.... And any type of hardware update,
especially this video driver update--- should remain as an optional update
and left available for download by users + administrators who actually
require such an update.

If possible, please let us know of a way that we can "exempt" out a
single/specific update from auto-downloading + installing.
