I have one Dell Dimension 2400 PC that did a similar thing after the latest
Windows Update. It tells the user that a new update was installed which
requires a reboot. The user reboots the PC and it boots up in a very low
resolution without the ability to correct it. We did a system restore to the
previous day, then the next day upon reboot it lost video resolution again.
I went to the Dell site and downloaded a previous version of the driver and
installed it successfully. Then the next day the user again got the notice
that an update was installed which required a reboot. Again, upon reboot the
resolution was lost.
At this point I stopped the automatic update. Set it to tell me only when
an update was available, but not to load it. I re-installed the previous
version of the Dell video driver. Later, w'en it said an update was
available, I clicked on "Custom". It showed the Dell graphics display
update. I unchecked it and closed the window. I got the window that allows
me to set it to not see that update again. That has solved our problem for
now. That may help you as well, I hope.
Good luck to both of us, eh?
