Uninstall that update and never get your hardware updates from Microsoft
again (unless it happens to be Microsoft hardware.)

In your case - get your updates from www.dell.com.. You just go to their
support pages, enter your Service Tag (Serial Number) and select the OS you
have and get all the latest drivers there.

…you, and other MVP’ers seem to think we (the public) installed this Dell
update intentionally. It was a part of the automatic update that MICROSOFT
put out. OOPS, “...we almost gave you the wrong stuff….oh wait, we did!” -MS.

I have my 150+ Dell PCs set to automatically download CRITCAL windows
updates from Microsoft, the maker, the vendor. Microsoft…always trust
downloads?? If we can’t trust what they give us, then who can we trust.
instead of pointing fingers at the end users for downloading the wrong
update, i think you need to point that finger in another direction...peace :/

Installing anything! is the responsibility of the of the onwer of the
computer. Yes it does suck that updates from M/S can F__k up your system but
it's just a fact of life and owing a computer.

By the way driver updates from M/S are an option, just configure windows
update not to display or download these...simple.

Mike: Some computers are in fact being offered these updates not as an
option, but as a critical update on Automatic Update.

Mike , you should do you some research before you "guess" whats going on.
we (the 150+ Dells at work) DID NOT ask for any updates besides windows
critical updates. Dell/MS decided it should be a critical update, then
BAM...now our vid is fuc't. It keeps trying to reistall again...ive had 1
dell PC get it 3 times. You would expect the manufacture to give you the
correct software.

quote from Mike-- "it's just a fact of life and owing a computer."
GREAT ANSWER. THATS WHY I OWN AN APPLE.

Sometimes automatic updates does include drivers. Not usually.

However - the automatic updates will not overwrite a newer driver if it is
installed and very few times is the driver that is pushed via Microsoft
Updates *newer* than the one you can get directly from the manufacturer of
said product.

Again - always install the latest driver from the manufacturer.
Never get non-microsoft device drivers from Microsoft.

As for what you own/use. I have and utilize several *nix boxes, OS X
machines and Windows XP/Windows 2003 systems.

In the case of the Dell driver (I have seen this one before) - by the time
the Microsoft push of the Dell driver was done by Microsoft - a few
revisions had already been released by Dell - and if you had downloaded and
installed the latest from the manufacturer (Dell) - then the push/pull from
automatic updates wouldn't happen and you wouldn't have the issues the
Microsoft released driver may have caused.

If you are allowing just automatic updates to control updating Microsoft
products at work - you need to discuss this with your system administrator..
WSUS servers are easy to setup and prevent such things from becoming an
issue.

Hi SS... (hard to tell in between the ranting-IT guys...)

But is updating (my) Dell drivers that simple? (www.del.com, Service Tag,
OS select). Must each driver be individually updated?

I have a new Dell, and haven't yet updated drivers (just getting operating
sysytem updates done, I have XP Media Center Edition 2005).

Thanks!
