I had WU on automatic and clicked on this to install. It changed all my
video settings, fonts were tiny and dimensions were very small for
everything. Tried to change settings, but nothing helped. I did a system
restore and brought back my old settings. I have now set WU off. Two
questions: (1) Why can't I decline turning on this update? (2) Is this a
known problem?

I am having the same problem. Can the update be removed without doing a
system restore?

I also installed this update, but instead of tiny fonts, I had very large
ones, also my home page was so large, I couldn't get complete page on screen,
the ends were cut off. I had to use a system restore, now the yellow icon
stays on my screen.

Please help! I have the same problem with this update. I did a system restore
and it fixed it but then my Mcafee message wouldn't work it said components
for the virus protection were missing . Should I have disabled my mcafee
before my system restore? Thanks !

Similar problem with two Dell PC's that I manage, except not trouble with
McAfee antivrus. Here is how i fixed it. Destroyed video drivers and
reverted back to 4 colors.

System restore to before the automatic update.(Displayed as Microsoft
Software Distribution Services 2.0)Update windows via windows update website

select all critical updates
select optionally video update
reboot after updates
video will still be wrong
remove video card from Device Manager
reboot
let found new hardware wizard complete
reboot again

After all this both Dell PCs video is back to normal.

I am not computer savvy at all. I don't want to start going into my computer
and removing a video card. Is there anyway to keep my Microsoft Updates on
automatic but DECLINE this one particular update---I look and it doesn't seem
like I can pick and choose--right now, I have my updates on OFF. Please
help! R

Automatic Update only downloads/installs critical patches, not drivers,
which is optional. To download and install drivers, a user must do a manual
Windows Update or Microsoft Update and choose to install drivers. If you go
to Windows Update and click on "Review Your Update History", it will list
whatever has been downloaded and installed together with its source.

We had one WinXP computer out of 40 that use Automatic Updates revert to
4-bit color and 640 x 480 resolution. We were unable to make any changes.
No different drivers had been installed. We removed all the April updates
and rebooted. Then, manually added each update back one at a time,
rebooting in between each. Each time, the computer booted normally. And,
we had no more problems with resolution or color.

I am of the opinion the issue occurred because the anti-virus autoprotect
was running during the download and installation, causing corruption. When
all updates were uninstalled and reinstalled, we did so with autoprotect
off.

Not true, if MS decides an driver update to be a critical one. And
yes, they did that in the past already.

Bye,
