Hi

Help please. Newbie to computing.

I have a Dell notebook running on Vista Business.

After logging on the computer shutsdown to blue screen and I have no
idea what to do.

The windows problem solver momentarily flashed up on the screen saying
there was a conflict with anti virus. I run McAfee on the machine.

Can anyone help me please.

Thanks for any replies.

Start the machine in Safe Mode.
(access the Advanced Boot Options menu by turning on your computer and
pressing the F8 key before Windows starts, then select Safe Mode)
Then uninstall the antivirus product.
Reboot (ensure you are not connected to a network or you risk virus issues)
and see if the machine starts OK.
If so, get a new Vista certified anti virus product and install it.

Will it start in Safe Mode? (F8 during boot)

Stable in Safe Mode?

Check startup items, check drivers, remove McAfee?

Hi,

If this is a new system then it's still under warranty. Contact Dell if so
as the stop error (blue screen) may also be related to hardware failure.
Otherwise, do as Mike has indicated and remove the antivirus software via
safe mode.

Thanks Mike. Done that. Switched computer off for teabreak and now
can't start it at all. Windows suggest I start a repair which may tak
several minutes but its been running for an hour. Is this the right wa
to go and is this running time normal. Says I can't cancel th
procedure

So grateful to you. Really green to computing

If you are now doing a repair - you will have to leave it - it may take up
to a couple of hours.
However if you have not started it yet - try and start in Safe Mode and see
what happens.
(or what do you mean it won't start?)

hopefully the "repair" will get your pc booting again. when you do,
consider another Antivirus not named MacAfee, or Norton. both are quite
expensive and tend to cause more problems than they fix. Try Avast or AVG,
both offer free home versions and work very well.

I agree with Rick. Call Dell. I suspect it's a hardware problem or a very
badly damaged OS.
