Dell Video Disaster

Windows update has updated the video driver for Intel 82865G video display on
a Dell machine in the office and the updated driver is a total disaster. It
will allow only a maximun resolution of 640 by 480 and 4 bit colour....
Thought I was going mad as the IT manager, when the same thing happened on
another machine in the office as a windows update went through....

1) Why the hell are driver updates coming through automatically? Thank
Microsoft, but would you please let us decide what to update.

2) What can I do - I've uninstalled the update, but it won't return the old
settings... Even restore last known good configuration doesn't help.

HELP!!!!

Philippe,

I also had a problem with the updated driver, but in my case I have
Automatic Updates set to *not* automatically download/install items. You may
want to talk to your IT manager to see if he/she knows about this (or even
wants to go down that road).

I installed the new driver and when I restarted (as requested by the
install), two things happened:
- My screen resolution was changed from 1024x768 to 1280x1024
- My screen was flickering like crazy

I reset the screen resolution manually, and then started to search the web
to see if anybody else had the flickering problem. I didn't see any
articles, but when I RIGHT-clicked on the desktop again to check something, I
noticed a new item on my context menu: "Graphic Options | Graphic Properties
....". I selected this option and was able to change the refresh rate from 75
Hz to 60 Hz, at which point the flickering stop.

I am not sure if you will have that option on your context menu, but it
might be worth checking out.

C'ya,
Jim In Maryland

We have hundreds of clients calling today with the same problem
The only thing you can do is reinstall the video driver either from the disk
that came the machine or download it from Dell's web site. Your Service Tag
number is helpful in narrowing down the list.
Good Luck

I was able to fix it myself and Im not an IT guy. I went to the C: drive and
read the "Read me" file that came with the driver that was installed. It read
the instructions to uninstall the video driver by going to Add/Remove
programs and I uninstalled the Intel 2 driver (I believe). Then when I
restarted the system told me there was new hard (VGA driver). I clicked
finish and my monitor was back to usual. Also, the Windows Update popped back
up again as if I never installed but this time I'm not clicking on it.

I was able to rollback to the old driver as well but the windows update pop
up is dangerous for our users. Does anyone know how to get rid of downloaded
updates so windows doesn't ask them to be installed?

Yes, exactly the same here with my Inspiron 1100. Fortunately, XP restore
worked. But what's the point of giving out an update for Dell machines that
doesn't actually work on Dell machines? dohh

I have found a newer Intel Driver for the 865G from Intel that is newer and
will prvent the problem you are having. Driver Number is: 14.13.0.4308

For the 845G folks are not so lucky: They need to revert back to an older
driver:
6.13.10.3510 or 6.14.10.3762 and hide the autoupdate of the newer driver so
it does not reinstall itself ... (just from experience)

Hope this helps

Thanks for the help on this issue from those who replied!
I fooled around with my settings so much yesterday to try to fix this that
they are all out of whack.
What is the default Icon size- Font size and Font for Windows XP- I just
want to get my old settings back now that I have fixed my resolution problem.

Thanks for any replies!
