Any further suggestions as to what we, the home users, can do ?

Don't use an insecure by design OS such as any OS from Microsoft.

ISP's should do more and disable access from any PC shown to belong to
a botnet. Don't forget, the billions of spam email sent each day are
from botnets of infected Microsoft Windows PC's.
