Hi, i just got an Acer Notebook wih Windows Vista Home Premium preloaded,
everything works fine except Live Messenger. I downloaded and installed the
latest version but i refuses to start. I got to the point where i first
started it and was able to enter my login info and clicke the checkbox for it
to remember me and login automatically, but as soon as it starts to connect
it crashes (takes like 1-2 seconds from when i launch the application).
I then get an error message saying than the Data Execution Protection
service caused it to crash.... Any sollution to this? (I Havent tried
disabling DEP, and i would prefer not doing that, cause i assume Messenger
should work with DEP)

Would very much appreciate any sollution to this....

I have tried downloading the latest flash player from Adobe, but it didnt
help, still have the same problem. Also tried uninstalling flash player and
launching messenger without it, but still crashes.

Start messenger.
Change status to appear in offline mode.
Maximise window.
Click sign on
*quickly* push ALT-T follwed by O
*quickly* go to General and untick Show Windows Live Today After I Sign In
To Messenger
*Very Quickly* Push OK!

If you couldn't hit OK in time at least make sure you uncheck Show Windows
Live Today.. it will be unchecked next time you go thru these steps.

Well, the problem is that there is absolutley no time for me to do anything
like this, Messenger crashes immidiatley after start, i think it crashes even
before logging me in.

I know some people have had problems with the "Windows Live Today" window
appearing efter start and causing the crash, but since the crash on my
computer comes so quick i don't think this is my problem. As i said earlier,
it crashed even before i can see it logging me in properly. There is
absolutley no time for me to make any input into the program before it
crashes.

As I said in my earlier posts, I don't think that my (and maybe your) problem
is due to the "Windows Live Today" window, since Messenger crashes too
quickly.

If you are having the problem with the "Windows Live Today" window, could
you not simply unplug your Internet connection and try launching Messenger,
or does that window still load and cause a crash even though you are not
connected to the Internet?

And isnt the problem with that window becouse of an old version of
Macromedia/Adobe Flash Player? And should be solved by simply downloading and
installing the lastest version (As I've done without it solving my problem)...

Anyways... Still awaiting a sollution, thanks for all the suggestions folks,
this seems to be a nice forum :-)

The Problem is definatly not due to teh windows live today window because it
does not get far enough for this to occur. Windows itself states the problem
as DEP, but offers little in the way of a solution.

Well, I am glad that i'm not the only one with this problem. For a while i
was starting to think that my shiny new computer might be causing the problem.

Let's hope we can find a sollution soon, it really sucks not being able to
run Messenger. And that DEP error message is horribly lacking in details so
it's very hard to find out what is causing the problem...

I was really hoping for a nice Vista experience, but this is really no fun :-(

Hey tdl0,

I am also facing the same problem, have tried downloading the latest version
of flash and even disabling DEP but when I try to disable DEP for Messenger I
get the error that it is not possible to disable DEP for Messenger. I am also
using Vista Home Premium, could it only be this particular version?

Thanks and Lets see how soon we fin a solution to this one.
