I know vary little about DEP. I started getting this
message after installing SP2. At first I thought it was
the software installed for the new HP PSC 2510 printer,
but I have uninstalled the software and the message still
appears. What is Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
and how do I take care of this problem? -- Thanks

Hi Dennis,
It seems that you are not alone with this problem and don't be so sure it is
not your printer software that is causing the trouble. SP2 worked fine on my
computers for months untill I installed a HP PSC 2610. Now I am getting a
DEP popup at startup, stating that DEP has prevented Generic Host Process for
Win32 Services from starting. This is happening on both the computers that I
installed the software on. It then continues to give an application error
with svchost.exe stating that the memory could not be written too and windows
generates an error report. I would be interested to know if you have also
been getting a not responding error with hpqtra08.exe at shutdown and do you
use symantec / norton security software?Your message was posted over a month
ago did you find a solution? Cause I haven't!!!!

I have been getting the same problem - I did the XP SP2 upgrade and
then installed the HP PCS2510 straight after, so didn't have the
printer working before SP2. I get the Generic Host Process for Win32
Services pop-up (although not at every startup...) and the
hpqtra08.exe failing to shut down.
The system tray icon for HP Digital Imaging will show "Initialising"
and never gets to the green tick icon, however, all the functions seem
to work fine on the printer. The only way the software will initialise
properly is if the printer is off when the PC is booted. Even then,
hpqtra08.exe will still fail to shut down.
HP support were not very helpful either.
This is on a Dell Dimension desktop. I also have a Dell laptop also on
XP SP2, which sometimes gets the Generic Host Process for Win32
Services pop-up, but the HP software will initialise correctly and
also shut down correctly.
If anyone has any good ideas as to how to get rid of this annoyance,
I'd appreciate it.

Just for the record, I have managed to fix the problem with Generic Host
Process and the shutdown errors. Let me briefly let you all out there know
how.

Firstly I tried disabling the DEP in windows this worked but is only a
workaround.

Part of the cause of the errors I found to be was the HP printer driver
installation. (Thanks Sky King for the tip). The other was the firewall and
antivirus software.

I Downloaded the full network Hp driver for my printer (370Mb approx) from
HP web site to install via ethernet. I did not use the disk to reinstall
the printer.

I then re-enabled DEP before I did an Uninstall of the HP photosmart 2610
printer.

Uninstalled the printer Using the Hp Level 4 Uninstaller found in the
Util\CCC folder on the disk that came with the printer.
If your printer is connected via ethernet disconnect the mapped drive to the
card reader in Explorer or My Computer by right clicking and selecting
disconnect before running the level 4 uninstaller.
If you use Symantec / Norton Firewall and Antivirus products make sure that
they are disabled in the notification area of the desktop. Then stop the
Symantec Core LC service through the Administration Tools\Services.

Then reinstall the printer using the downloaded driver files.

When the installation is complete start the Symantec Core Lc service and
enable your firewall and antivirus software before restarting.

And presto no startup or shutdown errors and no flashlight icon when you
click Start/My Computer.

I had/might still have the same problem. Two computers had the same
problem after installing the HP 2610 driver from cd. I have yet to
download the one off the website. I talked to HP support and found out
that somehow some of the dll files have been changed or corrupted.
After doing a sfc /scannow on both computers, they were prompted to
restore files from the windows cd and sp2 cd. The messages described
do not appear until the second or third reboot. I have not rebooted
one computer that many times since running sfc / scannow, but the other
pc has had one of those DEP messages, but only one this time instead of
a dozen! Who is to blame HP, Microsoft or Symantec?

I have not had any errors for a while now. I think the problem is centered
around HP and possibly Symantec's firewall software.
Here is a few observations that i have noticed about the errors. After a
reinstall the errors came back after either the printer was turned off or
unpluged from the switch.
Try reinstalling using the minimum install option.
Then do an internet program scan found in your Nortons firewall settings.
Use the "Always allow" setting for any programs that are from HP. Or just
leave unchecked and use the automatic program configuration. When you get an
alert from you firewall for a HP program select "always allow" and also
always allow the Generic Host Process.
This worked for one of my computers. The other one i reformatted and made
sure that the printer software was installed before i installed the firewall.
You could try uninstalling your firewall then doing a repair installation of
windows then reinstalling the printer software then reinstall the firewall.
Another thing that i do is make sure that my printer is always turned on
and connected to the same port on the switch. This is important particularly
if you use one of you computers as a DHCP server for your network. I now use
a router for my DHCP and i havent had any errors since.
Yet another observation i found is that you need to disconnect the mapped
drive before you do a reinstall of the printer software otherwise you will
get two mapped connections to the card reader.
I learnt all of this the hard way but ingnoring the numerous installation
problems and errors I find the HP 2610 a very fast network printer with
exceptional print quality for an inkjet. It is worth your persistance.

Hey Everybody with DEP errors with their HP All-in-One's. There is a
critical update on the HP website that fixes these errors dated 12/2004.
Worked on my computers to rid me of these annoying errors.
