Desk top short cut does not work

Every time I wanted to use a desktop based shortcut, I get the following
message"
The item'Wedding Invitee List.xls' that this shortcut refers to has been
changed or moved, so thsi shortcut will no longer work properly.
Do you want to delete this shortcut?

I seek help in getting this spreadsheet and a few other icons back with data
stored in their folders. Thank you in advance.

go to start> search, and look for your files there.

The message means what it says. The file the shortcut refers to was moved
from wherever it was when the shortcut was created. Or worse, it was
deleted.
Follow Mick's advice and do a search for it.
if that doesn't work, search simply for "xls" and see if it's one of several
files with that extension. Or open Excel and see if it's accessible from the
recently opened documents list. Or try "Recent items" from your start menu.
