Does your mother have data she needs to save? If yes, then have her buy an
external hard drive and attach it. If she is unable to copy the data files
to the external drive, connect remotely and you do it.
Then have her reboot the computer and press F10. This should get her into
the HP Recovery setup. Have her do a full destructive restore. This will
take quite a few hours. Once the recovery is complete, have her make
recovery disks. If you want, you can remote in and remove all the
unnecessary trial/obsolete/unwanted software. Install a good antivirus such
as NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free).
Since she has Vista, make sure you create an extra administrative account
(call it "CompAdmin" or "Tech") and then log into it. From there, make your
mother's user account a Standard account.
If all of this is too difficult to do remotely, have her take the machine to
a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).
