Desktop Icon will not delete

I have tried to delete an icon from the desktop but it keeps saying:

"This is no longer located in C:\users\name\desktop Verify the item's
location and try again"

I deleted it in Exporer from the desktop folder. The icon stayed on the
desktop.

How can I get rid of it??

Have you rebooted or logged off since you tried to delete the file? I have
noticed that sometimes it takes a reboot to get the deleted file to go away.

Believe it or not I am very computer savy but never think of the simple
things.

I see PaulB has provided a fix but a right click of the desktop and
'refresh' should have done it.
