desktop icons dont open with double click

i have windows vista, internet 9

when i double click on a desktop icon, it will not open up

i need a download to correct this

or a simple command (in our black screen) to change registry

i am an intermediate user.

when i r click, and use the open......the icons do open.

this just happened. did the malware check.all is okay on that front

need help thanks
