How can I show desktop icon titles within a rectangular box so that they can
be read more easily

Off topic, but if you click on a clear area of your desktop then press
Ctrl+A (press both keys at the same time) you will highlight all the
icons on the desktop with the background color.

Be carefull when all icons are highlighted, whatever you do with one
will do to all of them.

To clear the highlight, click a clear area of the desktop.
