i need some help. my brother managed to get rid of the viruses on the comp,
as well as clearing a lot of space. it worked fine earlier, but for some
reason, when i logged in earlier there was nothing on the desktop. the only
way i can access anything is by ctrl + alt + del and then using new task.
i've tried restoring it, and tried going into safe mode but i still have the
same problem under safe mode. any help?

Is one of your new tasks explorer.exe? If not, type that command first.

You can try this. In the Run box, type cmd.exe. In Command Prompt type:

sfc /SCANFILE="C:\Windows\explorer.exe"

Press Enter.

If you want to check all your system files,
and some pertinent registry keys, type this:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter. It may take a few minutes...

Is this a new PC? If not, what type of install media do you have? Because it
sounds like your system was compromised beyond your brother's attempt to
"...get rid of the viruses...". Might consider (and that is
just -consider-), a re-install. (That would, of course, follow other
general "wiping the disk" tasks. And it would also depend on the type of
install, I think... the pain meds are kicking in...)

Yes, the Command Prompt, after either scanning the single file or scanning
all system files, would have given the text message "Windows Resource
Protection did not find any integrity violations" if it did not find a
problem, or tell you, basically, it found a problem but that it could not
repair things, or it found a problem and it did repair things. Try typing
cmd.exe again in the Run box, but this time use your keyboard and press
Ctrl+Shift+Enter, instead of clicking OK. Do you see "Administrator:
Command Prompt" or "Administrator: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe" in the title
bar of Command Prompt? If so, run the commands I gave you again.

Too, you may want to try System restore, through either using Run or the
Command Prompt, by typing:

rstrui.exe

Press Enter.
