At least I am hopeful that the solution is here. Recently I posted a
request for help in regard to my desktop icons and text changing everytime I
booted up. A few days ago it was necessary to uninstall McAfee. I have not
had the desktop problem since, I am in hopes that the AV was the problem.

Probably. McAfee is one of the ones that protect the Registry too much,
preventing the user from making changes to many options. Even preventing
many installs.

Most likely, as Frank said. Don't go to Norton(Symantec). It's worse.
You might want to try a less intrusive, but effective *free* AV product,
such as Avast or AVG (there may be others as well):

http://free.grisoft.com/

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I'm using Avast here and find it effective. No viruses yet

Thanks. Exactly what I did, installed Avast and its only been a couple of
days, but programs and the OS seems to be working faster and smoother.
