After repeadily arranging the dsktop icons; only to have them
(alphabetically) re-sorted, (on setting Resolution) ... gets old, real quick.

Can the physical location of the icons be saved?

Yes. I log into my desktop computer remotely using my laptop, using Remote
Desktop. As the laptop has a much lower resolution screen compared to the
desktop, the icons used to be messed up when I got back.

I use this:

Problem sorted.

You may use the layout.dll shell extension from Microsoft. The extension
works fine in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista.

Save and Restore Desktop icon layout in Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista:
