Desktop system show "on battery"

I have a desktop machine that is running Windows Vista Business.
Periodically Vista decides that my system is running on batteries. I was
trying to install a piece of software the other day that told me that I had
to be plugged in to install. The icon in my tray showed that I was on
battery with 100% remaining. When I reboot it will go back to "plugged in"
but, after a couple of days, it will go back to "on battery".

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I also have a desktop that does this. I simply ignore it, although it
does distress me that Vista is brain-dead on the desktop vs notebook
issue of power management.

It appears as if rebooting does not fix my battery state anymore. I do not
know what I will do next time I have a piece of software that will not
install while on battery power.

There's no reason a desktop can't be "on battery". Both of mine are plugged
into a UPS and go "on battery" whenever I lose power. They also shutdown
automatically if the battery get's too low.

Are either of you guys using a UPS? If so, could that be part of your
problem?

I am on a UPS but it is not on battery. My power is on.

Just wondering if it's your UPS (or driver) that's causing the problem.
