I am running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on my home/personal computer; recently I
had a "crash", and had to use my ERD. Ever since, I keep finding things that
are totally out of sync (this is probably because when I updated all the apps
on the pc, I didn't recreate the ERD...I've learned THAT lesson!). Anyway,
so I had to reinstall IE6, and the service packs, etc. I've managed to get
almost everything working again - EXCEPT Microsoft Updater. If I try to
access the site manually, it says:
***
"Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:
1. Register or reinstall the files for me now
2.Top of Form 1
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"
***
I reinstalled and registered about a million times, to no avail. So I
checked out their other suggestions. I cannot register the msxml3.dll. NOR
can I register the wuaueng1.dll. All other files registered fine.
None of the other solutions listed worked either. I must be missing
SOMETHING - but I'm stumped.
Auto Update WILL notify me of updates - and download them - but it will
not install them; every one fails. And I get the "0x80070005" message as
well, from time to time. I AM an admin!
I sure hope someone has an answer....I've been at this for 48 hours, and
feel completely vulnerable since I know I don't have most critical updates!

Please try the following steps

Step 1: Re-register the following Windows Update files
=====================================
1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.
Run the following from a Command prompt:
2. regsvr32 WUAPI.DLL
3. regsvr32 WUAUENG.DLL
4. regsvr32 WUAUENG1.DLL
5. regsvr32 WUCLTUI.DLL
6. regsvr32 WUPS.DLL
7. regsvr32 WUWEB.DLL
8. regsvr32 JSCRIPT.DLL
9. regsvr32 ATL.DLL
9. regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
9. regsvr32 SOFTPUB.DLL
10. regsvr32 CDM.DLL
11. regsvr32 IUENGINE.DLL
12. regsvr32 WUPS2.DLL
13. regsvr32 MUCLTUI.DLL
14. regsvr32 MUWEB.DLL

Step 2: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
==========================
1. From command prompt: Net stop WuAuServ
2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename SoftwareDistribution to SD.old.
4. Again, from command prompt: Net start WuAuServ

Step 3: Re-register the relevant XML components.
===========================
1. From command prompt:
regsvr32 Msxml3.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 Msxml.dll

3. Install MSXML 3.0 SP5 from the following link:

Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5):
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...1d8/msxml3.msi
