Detecting Client Computers' Windows Update Status?

Hi Group,

I am trying to find a way to ensure that a user has an up-to-date Windows
system with virus control of some kind before they are allowed to join our
ResNet here on campus. The solution to this cannot be invasive (i.e. I would
prefer to not force downloading something to the client computer) and mostly
automatic. Right now our IT department has found a solution for tens of
thousands of dollars and I was wondering if there was a way to roll this with
previous technologies.
