Device plays music on WMP but it doesn't locate the device for syn

The portable device is plugged in. It plays music on the WMP. But when I
want to sync the music it asks me to plug the device in. It's already
plugged in! Needless to say it wont sync until I plug it in, even though it
is already plugged in and playing music that's already installed on the
device. How do I get WMP to recognize the device?
