DFS-R and PST

We plan to use DFS-R to replicate branch office servers, centrally to provide
a failover if need be and do central backup. The PST file of our users are
stored on the branch office servers (W2K8). The PST files are accessed
directly from the branch office server. Has anybody experience with this
situation ? If yes how bad is it ? Does it work ? Can we make it work ?

I know it is bad practice to use PST accross the LAN. But it looks we will
not have much choice.

DFSR will not be able to replicate the pst while the user is attached. But
the good part is when it is able to access the pst file it will only
replicate the changes, not the entire pst. There is a patch for the clients
that will cause the client to periodically close the pst. I would suggest
prestaging the replication group before creating it by either robocopy or
restoring from backup.

We've been using it for a couple of years with clients having the patch
without any problems.

Can you advise the name of the patch please. We have some issues with PSTs and would like to test this.
