DFS R2 file access slow while one of the repliation partners is do

Hello

I'm playing with DFS R2 in 2003 domain/server environment.
On the 2 DCs, I've setup DFS R2 for the name space and replication for the
users' profiles (mandatory profiles) / home directories. Profiles/home
directories reside on the DCs.
DC1, I've setup as the "first among all targets" and DC2 as the "last among
all targets" so that the clients use DC1 until it's down and failover to DC2.
And also for the profiles and home directories, I've checked off "clients
fail back to preferred targets" so that when DC1 comes back on, the clients
return to using DC1.

I noticed that when either of the replication partners goes down, whether
it's DC1 (first among all targets) or DC2 (last among all targets), the logon
(mandatory profile users) takes considerably longer (tried logging off and
logging back on multiple times but still slow) until the down server comes
back online. When the down server comes back online, the logon speed returns
to normal. Accessing the home directories is slow too when one of the
servers is down. Is this normal?

And when DC1 (first among all targets) is down, the users failover to DC2
and even when DC1 comes back online, they continue to use DC2 even though
"clients fail back to preferred targets" is checked off. They continue to
use DC2 even after logging off/logging back on multiple time unless the
client machine is rebooted. After the reboot, they return to using DC1 again.
Is this DFS's normal behavior?

Hello

The two DCs are in the same site. They are both also the name servers for
the name space (is this what you're asking about them being the root
replicas?). Is this not recommended?

We actually have only one site as a whole.
The OS version of the clients is XP SP2 and fully patched but not sure if
the specific patch for supporting failover was applied... If that patch was
part of the Windows Updates then it was applied to the clients.

I'm having the same problem. When one server is down, files are still
accessible on same path but the pc slows down and pauses for long periods. I
haven't been able to fine the reason. I disable AV on the pc. Shutdown
computer browser service. Checked for processor hogs in task manager. Tried
to shutdown applications that could be causing the problem ie. lotus notes.
