Hi,
Currently we have 2003 servers. We are trying to virtualize as many as
possible using ESX. One physical server we have currently hosts all our file
shares (shared data, profiles, home directories etc). The storage for this is
a dedicated LUN (2TB with 1.2TB used) on a fibre channel SAN.
We have had issues of late with the reliability of this server so I am
looking to do two things and was looking for a bit of advice. I intend to do
the following:
Build new server as VM and use a RDM mapping to present the existing LUN to
this new server.
Rebuild existing physical server and load its local disk storage up to match
the size of the LUN (Or bigger)
I would then install domain based DFS using these two servers as targets
(Not sure of correct terminology here) so that a user enters a single unc and
gets directed to either one, and both contain a copy of the data.
I figured I would load up disks on the physical because we only have one SAN
and therefore a SAN outage in any capacity is alleviated? (Is this overkill
or recommended?) (I have 1 physical and 1 virtual DC so the root will also be
available...)
Although these two servers are in the same location, they will be accessed
by remote users, is there any kind of control if two people have the same
document open?
