Hi,
I am planning to use DFS domain-based namespaces to host large number of
files which will exceed several terabytes. These files will be stored based
on yyyy/mm for several years. We have AD in our company. These files will be
read-only by application like web pages for downloading, etc. There is no
multiple user sharing.

My design includes 2 W2K8 Enterprise 64-bit servers for failover possibly on
2 seperate servers although I can have them on Virtual servers.
Question: Will both these server host the same namespace for fault tolerant?

I have divided the files into 10 different folder categories with subfolders.
I have selected their targets and they will be residing on 2 primary file
servers which will have 2 additional backup server for failover. I will
create folder structures in these servers. There may be 5-15 thousand files
in one particular sub-folder. Can you suggest me what me some design tips to
get better performance is accessing files?

Hi Nick,

If you want fault tolerance you should add these servers as root server in
your namespace and also enable DFS Replication among them. About performance
I would suggest you to check that Sites and site costs in Active Directory
are configured properly and Bridge all site links option in Active Directory
enabled. This will allow DFS to refer client computers to target computers
that have the least expensive connection cost. You can check the options for
configuring DFS at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc782417.aspx

Regards,

John
