Having a problem with the DFS GUI. Clients are OK accessing DFS links
fine, though.

If we open the Distributed File System GUI, or dfsgui.msc, and go Show Root,
navigate down to our existing root (called "FileShares") and select it, the
window just hangs. Get the hourglass or after while the window goes white.
This happens on any of our 3 Domain Controllers. All Win2K3 SP2.

Task Manager says it's Not Responding. It actually shows two DFS items as
Not Responding. One item (via Go to process) points to explorer.exe and the
other to mmc.exe.

I've done a few searches but not getting anything to really chase down.
Does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting this ? The basic
DCDiag tests show no problems.

Thanks,

Hello Jeff,

Has this worked before or newly setup environment? Have you check on the
main share permissions? Sometime incorrect permissions might slow down dfs.
Are you using dfs or dfsr..
Also try debugging,,this post might be helpful:

Yeah, we've been using this for years. We have lots of DFS shares. Not
sure the total number but we always have to go in and increase the filter ...

The main share permissions - on a Domain DFS Root, where would that be ?

I'll start reading that guide ... Thanks for the reply.

I mean permissions on your root share if you have domain based namespace

\\domain.com\RootShare the RootShare should have the exact same permission
accros all domain controllers that host dfs root

There is only one server that hosts, so I guess you could say the permissions
are "the same"

it's Everyone FC on the Share and Everyone FC on NTFS.

Hello Jeff,

If you manually mapped to the folders does it hangs as well? or it only
happens when you use the GUI?

Not sure what you mean by manually map. Like map a network drive ? Works
fine. No users are reporting any issue.

Only hangs when you run DFS admin thru the MMC.

A restart of the DFS service often fixes this issue.

Sometimes the MMC snapin will start but not enumerate any of the DFS
namespaces.
