DFSR and FSRM Quota Bug

Cross posted as I am not sure where this should be discussed.

I have set up DFSR on W2008 replicating folders between the W2008 server and a
W2003 R2 server. Replication is working fine but I have also set up FSRM Soft
Quotas on the W2008 server. I am replicating home folders and have set up an
Auto Apply quota on the parent of the home folders.

The setup looks like:-
W2003-server F:\Home\2002 is replicating with W2008-Server D:\Home\2002
The soft quota in applied at D:\Home\2002. When a new folder is created in
W2003-server F:\Home\2002 it is replicated to W2008-Server D:\Home\2002 but the
auto apply quota is not created on the replicated folder. If I use Windows
Explorer to create a new folder in W2008-Server D:\Home\2002 then the auto apply
quota is created.

This seems to be a bug either in DFSR or FSRM the Auto Apply quota should
automatically get applied when the folder is created. My suspicion is that DFSR
is not creating the folder correctly and avoiding the Quota creation being
triggered.

Has anybody else noticed this and does anyone know of a fix for it.

Hello DaveMills,

I can rebuilt your problem exactly with 2 windows server 2008 machines.

You have to reapply the same quota template on the level where you have configured
the auto apply setting with the last option.

Rightclick the "Auto apply" folder and choose Edit Quota Properties, leave
it at its default setting and choose OK, now you will be asked where the
template should apply, choose "Do not apply auto apply to derived quotas".

Why this is not done automatic is a good question.

Interesting to see it also applies to 2 x w2008 server.

Yes, I figured that out.

I believe it is a bug, something is not working right. When Explorer creates a
new folder the quotas work but when DFSR creates a folder it does not work.

Hello DaveMills,

I asked to "The Storage Team at Microsoft - File Cabinet Blog" about this
and got following clearing answer:

"Auto quota configuration information is stored under system volume information
folder. DFSR does not replicate any data under system volume information
folder. Usually, people manually replicate the settings unless they use something
like a backup-restore tool to copy the existing settings. You can also use
any other available folder/disk migration tools."

You find them here:

Thanks Meinolf, I cannot find the blog entry (so far). The above does explain
what is happening but I still think this is a poor implementation. From the
users perspective the Quota is supposed to apply to new folders. If Windows
Explorer creates a new folder it gets the Auto Quota applied. If DFRS creates
the folder then it is effectively is disregarding the quota that should be
applied. This is rather like disregarding the NTFS permission and then saying
"We don't copy the NTFS permission, it not part of the DFSR design to have
correct permissions". Or course DFSR has done permissions correctly but not
quotas. I am not asking for quotas to be replicated just that when a folder is
replicated the quota at the target is applied during folder creation.

Hello DaveMills,

I agree with you that this is not the optimal solution.

There is no blog entry, just pointed you to there webpage.

Furthermore i found now additional information about the FSRM data. When
you define quotas, File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) stores information
about these quotas in the quota.xml, quota.md, and databasefilescreen files
in the \System Volume Information\SRM folder on the drive that the quotas
were imposed initially

Best regards
