I recently posted on this forum looking for help with my windows update and
automatic update problems I've been having since doing a Windows XP repair.
I saw alot of other people were having similar problems, and I don't know if
all of them were able to resolve them. I was one of them who couldn't.
After trying several of the solutions offered by the experts in this forum
including:
1) Running the batch script that requires creating a notepad file
C:\register.bat. Installing the newest version of Windows Update v3
(
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237), downloading & installing the
927891 patch
(
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A), reboot, and then run windows update again
2)Clearing all the contents from the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir
folder (while stopping the wuauserv service & then restarting after contents
were removed). Installing the newest version of Windows Update v3
(
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237), downloading & installing the
927891 patch
(
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A), reboot, and then run windows update again
Already long story short, I came across a post that talked about a program
called Dial-a-fix that could fix the windows update problems.

OK - now try downloading and running Dial-a-Fix from
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Then click "GO"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution" yet.

I was skeptical at first, but was willing to try it out after everything
else failed to help my WU problem. Well, I'm happy to say that it worked
like a charm and Windows Update & Automatic Updates are working flawlessly
again. I posted this for anyone else there in a similar situation. I have
nothing to gain from this post, & am no way affiliated with Dial-a-fix. I
just hope it can help. Kudos to Robin Walker for originally posting this
solution and also to the creator of Dial-a-fix.
