I have used this program to dial my land line phone, using a Lotus Smart
Center phonebook and later the dialer.exe phonebook, since windows 95. So
far, in Vista, I can only dial numbers within my area code. There is a place
to set up "dialing rules", but no matter how I do that, only the first digit
of the area code is dialed. There is a "help' button, but no help file
actually exists. Dose anyone know how to make this work"

I received an email from someone with the same problem a few months back. As
I couldn't answer the question I contacted Microsoft UK. They, are looking
into it to see if they can provide me with a suitable answer/workaround. The
currently problem is finding someone who at Microsoft that actually uses the
dialler software. Lets just say I'm still waiting on that reply.

I've never used your program, but have you tried installing it in XP SP2
compatibility mode, if it worked OK in XP?

Right-click on the .exe>Compatibility tab> and install in XP SP2 mode

--Thanks for the reply. I am probably the one who emailed you before. I
suspect MS wants me to use their internet calling program, but that is the
work of a power mad demon who wants to take control of my life. Please do
post again if you come up with something. I found a freeware program "my
phone book dialer" but it is a little clumsy compared to the old dialer.exe,
which I managed to load on my Vista machine, but Vista doesn't like it!
Thanks again, CFF

Mick, Phone dialer is part of the Windows operating system. Type 'dialer'
into the run box and you will see for yourself.

Hi pbpapa,

Having checked my records, yes you are the person who emailed me. My
apologies for not getting back to you, but as I stated in my earlier post, I
have been waiting for a reply from Microsoft UK.

As soon as I get a suitable reply I will post the details here and also
personally email you with any suggestions.

Unfortunately I can't say how long it will be before I get a reply, but your
email has been flagged to remind me that you are awaiting an answer.

I am having the same problem with version 6.0 Build 6001: Service Pack 1
running on Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1 (i.e. 2nd and 3rd digits of
the area code are lost; 231-456-7890 becomes 2-456-7890). This happens
regardless of the dialing rule settings (e.g. disable call waiting, dial full
area code, dial 1, etc.). It happens when faxing using Windows unless the
setting is used to dial the number exactly as entered and skip
checking/applying dialing rules. I did not have this problem using the
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 version of dialer.exe. I wonder what
changed to cause it to drop the 2nd and 3rd digits of the area code. Very
frustrating!

URGH, apparently, according to
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-mail/6...ts-dialer.html

we must store our numbers in Canonical (International) format. Instead of "1
555 555-5555", store the number as "+1 (555) 555-5555". The first number
will confuse dialing rules and result in the number "1 5 555-5555" being
dialed, a number which obviously won't work. Try it yourself, change the
number format to "+1 (555) 555-5555" and see what happens.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/247192/en-us
You Must Enter Telephone Numbers in Canonical Form in Order to Use Dialing
Rules
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318575/en-us
Dialing rules may not be applied to tools such as Fax and Phone Dialer on
Windows XP-based and Windows Vista-based computers

Kind of a hassle?
