Where did all the emoticons go (and stored)?

Hi there, I have asked this question quite some time ago, but never thought
to save the conversation.
I have just recently done a 'system restore' and lost the use of all my
custom emoticons. Where have they gone? Are they still here somewhere?
Also, where do they get stored? I originally asked a similar question
relating to this in regards to copying the folder to use on multiple accounts
on the same PC.

Thanks again,
Ryan :-)

Greetings Ryan,

Weird -- System Restore shouldn't affect your custom emoticons (and I use SR regularly
myself).

You'll find the files here on XP:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\LiveID\ObjectStore\Custom Emoticons.

and on Vista:
\Users\username\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\ LiveID\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons

Where username is your Windows username and LiveID is your Windows Live ID e-mail address.

Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden by default, to see them simply press the
Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools,
then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'.
After click OK, they should appear with the other folders.

If you're using a version of Vista with Previous Versions (Ultimate, Business), you could
just right-click the CustomEmoticons folder, choose the Previous Versions tab and restore an
earlier version to before the restore. Although you may want to take a peek to see what's
going on in there.

Note that you can't just copy these files between users on the same PC, emoticons are only
transferable to the same account (Live ID), although it can be any PC. So you can use two
PCs and be sign into the same account on both and copy your folder over without a problem.
But if it's a different account, copying it won't do anything.

Thank you so much, I was able to find them again.

And they all work again after a power cycle on the computer.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Jonathan
My Windows Messenger was updated during the night and this morning I can not
access the custom emoticons. In tne new messenger there isn't even an
accessibility to adding emoticons that I can find. I read the previous
post/reply and have found the directory with my custom emoticons but I don't
know what to do from here forward so that they are available to me in the new
MSN LIve messenger program which appears to be showing as Version 4.7
(4.7.3001), Any suggestions?

Hi,

This isn't new, this is the Messenger client that comes with Windows XP.

What you want is Windows Live Messenger (not Windows Messenger), which has what you're
looking for. You'll find it in your start menu.

Jonathan, maybe you can help me please.

I got a new computer and re-loaded windows live and copied over the files
(as per your instructions on where to find them) but I still cannot see my
old custom emoticons.

Any ideas please?
Thanks, Sophie.
