Did SP2 install fully, partially or not at all???

Even though SP2 is shown as a critical update, I have been unable to download
it with manual or automatic updates without a "download failure" so I ordered
the CD-ROM from Microsoft.

Following all of the advice on virus/spyware scan, defrag, cleanboot, etc.
then SP2 install from CD proceeds thru backup, copy, install files and then
near the end gives "Service Pack 2 Setup Failed" with only the OK button and
no other info. Thinking SP2 install had failed, I rebooted computer, but when
rebooting I got the blue screen with "Please Wait ........", the small
Microsoft logo screen and then the "Do you Want to Enable Automatic Updates
Now?" which seem to indicate that SP2 might have installed. Upon completion
of boot, the red Windows Security Center icon appears in Sytem Tray and the
Control Panel Add/Remove Programs shows an entry for Windows Service Pack 2!

However, looking at My Computer, Properties, General Tab still shows
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 1" and
checking the Windows Update Site still indicates that I need Service Pack 2
as a critical update.

So my question: is SP2 installed fully, partially or not at all? Should I
just c assume SP2 is installed OK and not worry about it or should I try to
uninstall it and try again??

Thanks for your help.
Chris

What does it say?

Have you returned to Windows Update since installing (or attempting to
install) SP2?

Hi,

In the KB article
"You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update"
at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=888162

see

"Q1: I do not think my computer is in an "incomplete Windows XP SP2
state." How can I know for sure?"

Thanks for quick response

1. Winver shows "Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service
Pack 1)" Note that after the colon there is no typo, it really says "Service
Pack 1" even though info before colon appears correct for SP2 per KB888162.

2. Control Panel Add/Remove shows entry for SP2.

3. Returning to Windows Update site, critical updates still indicate that I
need to download SP2.

4. Also, per KB888162 I checked lsass.exe version is 5.1.2600.2180 which is
correct for SP2.

So I'm still not sure whether SP2 install is 100% OK. Please advise.

Thanks,
Chris

Please look for diagnostics about this failure.
E.g. there are undoubtedly text log files recording it
and there is probably even an entry or two in the Event Viewer...

I would say you don't have a healthy system
but before taking a sledge hammer (virtual of course!) to it
try finding out what is wrong. Then you will have a better idea
of what you need to do to fix or circumvent the problem.

WinXP SP2 is not installed (properly or fully).

Can you successfully uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs?

Can you use a Restore Point which predates the attempted install?

It sounds like the machine was already infested with hijackware before even
the first installation attempt.
