You cannot transfer files and settings from a computer that is running a
32-bit edition of Windows XP to a computer that is running Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition

This is an Optional update that address this Symptom :

Since you don't have that issue, your conclusion is correct. KB896344 is
not the cause of the issue and therefore, removing it will not alleviate
the settings issue.
KB917283 Optional - replaces the Aspnet_filter.dll - only required if
..NET Framework is installed
KB829019 Optional - is the .NET Framework
KB909993 Optional - Windows Media Connect 2.0
> Windows Media Connect delivers media files to devices that support the UPnP protocol.
This is the *most* likely cause of the issue.
KB909520 Optional/Required - software update for Base Smart Card
Cryptographic Service Provider

KB891122 Optional - Update for Window Media Digital Rights
Management-enabled players
> This update improves the robustness of the Windows Media DRM system.
Could be ... but not *likely* cause of the settings issue.
