direct x problem (direct 3D)

whenever i try to load age of empires 3 an error appears saying:
Direct3D initilialization failed possible causes:
old or corrupted graphics driver.
Direct3D improperly installed
HArdware acclertation disabled
Starting the application with the worked station locked

i have installed directX 9c in safe mode and direct 10somthing and still
nothing will work what should i do next? this is on a windows XP computer and
the game has worked on it before.
