Directory or file cannot be created

I cannot get any update to install. XP Pro, trying to get sp3 and lots of
security updates. I can download, run. They unpack, give me the eula choice
and then fail with "Directory or file cannot be created". I have done the
kb943144 reregistration to no avail. This has been going on for some time,
predating the sp3 release.

How much free space is available on the drive ?
What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?

Please try installing one of the downloaded updates again. When it fails
to install, open the WindowsUpdate.log located in WINDOWS
Start > Run > type in
windowsupdate.log
Click OK or press Enter

Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent entries to the log.
Copy and paste at least the last 50 or so lines into your reply, Kent.

no, this has been going on at least 5 months. XP and Office 2003 predate
that by several years. I have updated to Excel and Word 07 in the last 45
days but that did not effect this problem. My update history goes back to
July - mostly failures.

The installation issue is most likely *directly* attributable to McAfee
as it's not allowing the creation of the directory or replacement of
files. Check the User Guide or Help files to learn how to completely
disable McAfee, which includes all related services and processes. If
that includes a firewall you'll need to *enable the native XP firewall*.

Once you've done that, then try once again to install the updates.

I'd suggest you visit McAfee's web site for a possible clue but, just
did that and frankly, their site is not very User friendly.

There is an MSKB article that shows how to resolve a connection issue
with the update web sites that is caused by McAfee:

You receive error code 0xC80001FE when try to connect to the Windows
Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site to install updates

Please read the KB as it advises one on configuring the AV scanner to
avoid the issue and perhaps others related to McAfee.
